Apple Inc.
Once again, I like to pick Apple. Why? Its stock price rocked... What did Apple do? Well, let's take a look at the way it competes with its rivals.
Apple is always being the first mover in the market: from its MP3 players to its Iphone. Sony used to dominate the MP3 market with its walkman players. This has been history since Apple made its first move: suprised the industry with its Ipod. its Ipod suddenly dominates the whole market. it's so hard for any company to catch up since consumers have fell in love with Ipod, so is Apple Inc.
Its Ipod has the Niche dominance. its features and fuctions secure its market position. everyone in the MP3 industry just wants to copy Apple products... it's so late for them.
Now, Ipod has the most market shares in the MP3 industy.
Lately, Apply has its Iphone in the market. Although Apple is not a cell phone producer, its Iphone is way above its rivals. Iphone's niche guarantee it a position. As the sale of Iphone growing, its market share is also being heavier... so, its stock price rocked...
MTA
If i have a choice, i will not use MTA service at all. it's serve is the worst i know so far. it can never compare with subways in Japan, H.K. Singapore and many other places in the world...
MTA is protected by the Government. its monoply status is the root for such a bad service. no matter how bad MTA becomes, we still need to use it. there's no can compete with it.
Google
Why Google? because its stock price is flying like a rocket... from its IPO price 88 dollars to now 700 dollars, it just takes about 3 years... which company can do that?
Now Google surpass Yahoo and Microsoft and becomes Number one. it's like the Monoply in the search engin industry. Google's niche, like google map and gmail, gives its users a lot of benefits. Google is expanding so fast that no one can catch up with it. So, its market shares is surging. It dominate the distribution channels and bring it such a great profit.

I also chose Apple as one of my companies. They have always been one of my favorite companies as Steve Jobs has did an excellent job in managing this business. Yes, they do have a competitive advantage amoungst it's peers, but how much more can the media player industry evolve? From what I can see, the market has been pushed to it's limits.
I feel like I just read this post on another blog...But in any case, I wouldn't say the iPod is serving a niche market. Maybe when it came out it was. Since it was the new, hip thing around, it was definitely focused on the trendy people out there. But I think it moved more into market share dominance since everyone seems to be buying it.
I wouldn't class Google as a monopoly. I'd say they hit a niche market and then ran away with it and started stealing up market share. They're still not number 1 in market share, but they do offer a lot of things to their user base and customers. Also, part of the reason their shares went up so much in price is because they didn't price their stock correctly.
I think for Google to really attain market share and overall dominance, is to keep up with what they're doing but also improve some of their other sections. Have you ever seen their finance division? It's pretty bad compared to Yahoo.
MTA sure has a monopoly but very rightly said by you that thier are probably the worst subways when compared against other nations, and I just read an article that MTA should sell thier one way tickets at $8 to break even. Take that for a smelly service. What are your comments on it??
I do agree with what David said about the media player industry is at its peak. Over the past few years the industry have come up with a variety of different media player products. If you just focus on Apple, over the past seven years they have already released a variety of media players from the original ipod to mini ipod, to nano, to video ipod and now iphone each with a different design and aslightly different feature. So what else can you bring to this industry, have they already pushed to its limits? Can company like Apple be able to add something more to the media player industry and push the market even further?
Eddie i also chose Apple and Google as examples of companies with a huge competitive advantage. How come you did not mention what exactly is the niche that Apple brings to the tabl that has allowed it to be so successful. I think it's not the superior technology, but rather a great design and brilliant marketing campaign. A perfect example of it would be IPhone. It's not superior to other phones that have the same or sometimes better apps (Nokia N95), but its' design is very unique and Apple's reputation is a huge force driving the sales.
